A Plea to GamerGate: Please Stop

For those who are not aware of GamerGate, MRAs (men’s rights activists), man children, and many levels of Adam Baldwin being a douche canoe, give this very detailed timeline of the issue a read. I will give you the gist of it. This all began when a jilted ex-lover of Zoe Quinn accused her of sleeping with a video game journalist in order to get positive reviews for her indie game, Depression Quest. That’s it, really. I kid you not. But that one event, which happened almost a year ago, turned into a chaotic, ad hominem filled argument between a broad spectrum of female gamers…

Corporations Fleece Women and They Think We Don’t Know

When we talk about feminism and inequality, we tend to forget that it can hide in more subtle ways within our society. Some of the worst culprits of inequality are the corporations who market products “designed for women.” They charge the female consumer more money for equal or lesser-cost goods than they would sell to men. So, not only are women getting paid less than men… According to the Institute for Women’s Policy and research, “In 2013, female, full-time workers made only 78 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 22 percent.” (http://www.iwpr.org/initiatives/pay-equity-and-discrimination) The Pew Research Center says, “according to…

The Biggest Security Threat? It’s Not Nukes

The biggest security threat to the United States and across the globe isn’t nuclear weapons, Isis or terrorism. The biggest threat is water. More to the point, natural resources, especially water. Water security is such a major component of world politics that no one really wants to talk about it openly because it can cause panic and fear. The UN has paid very close attention to this issue. According to them; “Water security is defined as the capacity of a population to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality water for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being, and socio-economic development, for…

John Oliver can even make an important discussion about food waste funny.

The other night John Oliver tackled food waste. He talked about wasteful eating habits and the culture that makes food seem like a status symbol, and the ability to shower ourselves with a mountain of french fries a sign of affluence. Americans throw away enough food to fill 730 football stadiums. We throw away a third of our food, 50%  more than fifty years ago. In 2013, more than 49 million people didn’t have enough food. John Oliver is maybe THE best person to take scary, painful, depressing, and downright disgusting but VERY IMPORTANT DISCUSSIONS THAT NEED TO BE HAD and…

Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition Review

When most people look at the title of this game, the first thing that may come into their mind is “That’s a mouthful of a title.” It is, but there is more to Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition. For starters, it’s a game that celebrates time-honored Mexican traditions, such as Dia De Los Muertos  (Day of the Dead) and the Luchadors/Luchadoras (Mexican Wrestlers). I was afraid Guacamelee would misappropriate those traditions in awful ways. (see Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show which included Karlie Kloss wearing a Native American Headdress, and  World of Warcraft also has this issue with Mists of Panderia, among many others)…

Anonymous Champions Sandra Bland

Anonymous releases video Apparently, the hacktivist group, Anonymous spoke out about the July 10th arrest and subsequent death of Sandra Bland. “Sandra Bland was murdered by the same people who swore to serve and protect the citizens of the United States. These men have no honor and we cannot …trust their so-called evidence.” They then gave evidence for their assertions in a numbered breakdown: The Waller PD murdered Sandra Bland, doctored the evidence, and took the mugshot after her death. These assertions aren’t holding up well to scrutiny, but criticism is weak and doesn’t usually confront their support in a direct and substantive…

Racism and White Supremacy

By: Jack Stephens From: Blog and the Bullet A lot has been going on with me in the past couple of days pertaining to group work and activist work at San Francisco State University and one issue that has been brought up in a few situations (completely unrelated to each other) is the issue of white privilege and white supremacy in society as supposed to just racism in general. Essentially, racism is what most people expect it to be. It’s thinking that one’s own race is superior to others and that other races are either sub-human or not as gifted as…

White Isn’t a Thing: White Pride is Racism

Many of the people that insist neither they nor the confederate flag are racist are strong advocates–formally or informally–of white pride or white supremacy, and white pride is no different than racism. You can bear witness to these questions: Why is being proud of being white racist? How am I racist for white pride but that guy isn’t racist for his black pride or his hispanic pride? There are two important answers to this. “White” isn’t a thing. We have Italian heritage, St Patty’s day parades, German American social clubs, British pubs, French cuisine and French restaurants and French Fries, French bread, French…

Why the Confederate Flag is Bullshit

Ever since a racist young man killed nine members of an historic North Carolina church, the confederate flag has become an important debate, and we’ve been asking a lot of important questions. Is it racist? Should it be flown at a state capital? The debate and these events are important not merely because of the flag itself but the history and culture surrounding it and because of the responses these events and questions engender from proponents of the flag. There are some who assert that the Confederate flag is not racist and not offensive. That assertion is often back-pedalled to, “okay it’s not…

Kingsman: The Secret Service

I really liked the song “Money for Nothing,” by Dire Straits, and if you’re judging me right now, go read Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker series and tell me you don’t inexplicably like them as well. I suddenly really like that song all over again. And I nominate the opening credits of Kingsmen as some of the slickest, prettiest and action-packed of all time. I think there was more pretty and shiny and actiony in the first minute and a half than there has been in a lot of movies that claim to be actiony and shiny. Pew Pew Pow Pow The…
